Encountering God 29c: Show Us the Father

Philip is the one who put it into words at the Last Supper:

"Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us." John 14:8

Sounds much like Moses’ question of God: “show me Your glory.”

Jesus mildly rebuked Philip.

"Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? John 14:9

Maybe we are still seeking something we don’t really need. We have already seen everything we needed to see in the life of Christ. Any so-called faith that needs evidence in order to believe, is not really faith at all. Jesus saw the crowds increasing, thanks to the miracles He was performing, so He said,

"This generation is an evil generation. It seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it . . ..” Luke 11:29

The Pharisees also came looking for a sign from him. Jesus sighed deeply in his spirit and said,

"Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly, I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation." Mark 8:11-12

Wait a minute! Didn’t Jesus perform signs and wonders? At Pentecost, didn’t Peter say that Jesus was "a man attested to you by God with mighty works and wonders and signs that God did.” Acts 2:22

What could be wrong with wanting confirmation? I mean, the Bible is filled with miracles. The church gathered together in prayer.

And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness. Acts 4:31

But here’s the significant difference: The church was not ASKING for God to shake the place; they were praying for BOLDNESS. In the same manner, Jesus came to give His life as a ransom for many, not to impress us with His powers. Likewise, at Pentecost, Peter was focused on  preaching the good news about Jesus, not on wowing the crowd with speaking in tongues.

What I’m saying is, it’s a matter of focus. When our eyes are on Jesus, and not on the signs or the miracles, we might just end up with the signs and the miracles in addition to Jesus. It is fruitless to look for signs if we miss the primacy of Christ, “looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith” Hebrews 12:2 After Peter had healed the man by the Beautiful Gate, he made it clear that “faith in his name-has made this man strong,” and “the faith that is through Jesus has given the man this perfect health in the presence of you all.” Acts 3:16

It’s all about Jesus. Seek His face. Not His hands.
